For our DIY assignment my group had a wide variety of choices but decided to make lip balm. We chose this because we felt we were more likely to use and enjoy lip balm than other facial products due to our lack of interests/want for them. Our product is the best possible version of lip balm because of our replacement of shae butter for cocoa butter. We made this change because it enhances the smell and makes it more pleasant and appealing to use. It is very worthwhile for others to make their own lip balm using our recipe because they will be very pleased with what we’ve created. Before this project my group had little experience with making DIY projects in general, let alone facial products but we didn’t let that stop us. As we went through our procedure, practically everything went to plan and ended up as expected. The only thing we would do differently would be more prepared with materials for when pouring then liquified version of the lip balm into the containers
Our three most important ingredients were coconut oil, beeswax, and cocoa butter. We used coconut oil because it is antibacterial and it keeps cracked lips clean and safe from germs and bacterial growth. It can also reduce inflammation when placed onto the problematic area. It can do many of these things due to its ability to increase collagen which heals damaged lips.
(stylecraze.com/articles/use-coconut-oil-lip-balm/%3famp=1 ). We used beeswax because it is natural, it protects lips from the sun and infection, and has a nice smell as well. It has been proven to be effective as it is extremely common in skin products and contains antibacterial agents.(organic-body-products.webmode.com/news/benefits-of-my-homemade-beeswax-lip-balm/). Lastly, we chose cocoa butter because it prevents dry skin, peeling, aging, and effectively soothes burns and rashes. This is proven to be true by the antioxidants that come from cocoa beans and the fact that it is an emollient meaning it adds a protective layer to the lips. The beans also include compounds called cocoa mass polyphenols, which prevents aging.(draxe.com/cocoa-butter) Optional: Essential oil for other smells: We included orange in ours.📷

The steps we took to complete this project are as follows:
Step 1: Fill the boiling pot half way and set it to boil
Step 2:Get 8.6g of coconut oil, 2.9 g of beeswax, and 6.4 g of cocoa butter. Then place all in a mason jar.
Step 3:Place the mason jar in the boiling water and wait for the products to melt.
Step 4(OPTIONAL): Put in essential oil.
Step 5: Pour liquid into designated containers and wait for it to cool down.
To conclude, our lip balm is important because it represents the teamwork and creativity of my teammates and I. We worked together and followed directions to create something of our own. The ingredients worked so well together because their texture, solidity, healing agents, and smell. Overall it was an interesting and new experience and if others want to create something new (or just need lip balm) they should use our recipe.
